Rubrics Made Easy: Create Standards-Based Rubrics with ChatGPT in No Time!
As band directors, we know that assessment rubrics are essential for providing feedback to students and helping them understand their progress. But creating rubrics from scratch can be time-consuming and, let’s be real, sometimes a little tedious. Enter ChatGPT! With a detailed prompt, you can streamline the rubric creation process, allowing you to create clear, tailored assessment criteria in just a few minutes. Let’s dive into how you can use ChatGPT to simplify rubric design and even make the process a bit more enjoyable.
Step 1: Set Clear Goals for the Rubric
Before you ask ChatGPT to help with a rubric, take a moment to think about what you’re assessing. Is it a performance, a playing assignment, a music theory assignment, or something else? Define the primary skills or goals you want to evaluate. For example, in a performance assessment, you might want to assess tone quality, pitch accuracy, rhythm accuracy, articulations, and dynamic contrast.
Step 2: Prompt ChatGPT with Specific Details
The more specific you can be in your prompt, the better the results. Let’s say you want to assess a jazz audition performance. Here’s a sample prompt you might give ChatGPT:
“Create an 4 point standards-based audition rubric for my jazz ensemble auditions. Criteria should include: tone quality, note accuracy, rhythmic accuracy, style, musicianship (dynamics, articulations). Output in table format.”
In just seconds, ChatGPT will provide you with a rubric in table format that you can either use directly or adjust as needed.

Step 3: Customize and Refine the Rubric
ChatGPT’s output is a starting point. You might need to tweak descriptions to better match your expectations or the level of detail your students need. If certain aspects feel too vague, just ask ChatGPT to refine those areas. For example:
“Make the ‘Tone Quality’ descriptions for levels 2, 3, adn 4 more detailed for an advanced 8th-grade musician.”
ChatGPT can then adjust the rubric to meet your needs more precisely, making it more specific or sophisticated based on your request.
Step 4: Add the Rubric to Google Sheets
Once you have a rubric that fits your needs, it’s easy to add it to whatever system you use. The easiest way is to simply copy the rubric from ChatGPT and paste it in to Google Sheets to format size, spacing, font, etc. Once the rubric is formatted to your standards, copy the entire rubric from Sheets and paste it into a Google Doc.
With the rubric ready, you can provide students with meaningful feedback that helps them focus on areas for improvement. And, if you need to assess different skills or assignments, just go back to ChatGPT and tweak the rubric categories
Why ChatGPT is a Game-Changer for Rubrics
Using ChatGPT to create rubrics can save you time and provide a starting point from creating a rubric from scratch. Plus, by experimenting with ChatGPT’s prompts, you’ll get a feel for the kind of rubric language that resonates best with your student's needs and skill level.
